The Importance and Meaning of Certification in Organic Cotton Products

The Importance and Meaning of Certification in Organic Cotton Products

The Importance of Certification in Organic Cotton Products: Safe and Sustainable Choices

The fact that the clothing you buy for your sensitive skinned baby is organic matters greatly for your baby's health and for the sustainability of nature. This is why the importance of using organic cotton products as you raise your baby matters enormously to you too…

So;

Is This Product Really Organic Cotton?

We're sure this question crosses your mind every time you come across organic cotton products. The most decisive way to understand the authenticity of organic cotton is to check its certifications. You can view certifications on product labels, on the websites where you're browsing products, or in detailed product descriptions. If you can't see the certifications for a product being sold as Organic Cotton, you can ask the seller whether such certification exists.

What Do Organic Cotton Certifications Actually Mean?

We've put together the certifications and their meanings for you, in a way you can enjoy reading over a cup of coffee. Let's take a look together 👇

What is the GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard certification?

It's one of the world's most trusted organic textile certifications. So what does the GOTS label tell us?

  • A product bearing the GOTS label contains at least 70% organic cotton.
  • The cotton used in the product has been inspected at every stage, from field to shop.
  • It contains no harmful chemicals, pesticides or dyes.
  • It protects both nature and workers' rights.

In short: the GOTS label shows that a product has genuinely been produced organically and fairly.

What is the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification?

It certifies that a product contains no harmful substances, meaning it's skin-friendly.

  • Under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, all accessories used on the product, such as buttons and zips, are tested.
  • It carries the "Class 1" standard, defined specifically for babies aged 0–3.
  • It is tested against harmful substances that carry a risk of allergy.
  • A product with OEKO-TEX certification passes testing at every stage.

In short: OEKO-TEX is a label that certifies a product is gentle and safe for your baby's skin.

What is OCS – Organic Content Standard (Blended)?

It's an international certification that independently verifies the accuracy of the proportion of organic content in products.

  • It's an important certification that verifies the amount of organic content in a product.
  • The entire supply chain is documented transparently.
  • It enables clear, consistent information to be provided to the consumer.

In short: OCS provides assurance about the proportions and accuracy of the content.

What is BSCI – Business Social Compliance Initiative certification?

It's an important part of social sustainability, itself a key part of overall sustainability. BSCI is an international system that certifies workers' rights are protected during production and that work takes place under ethical conditions.

  • 👷♀️ Protects workers' rights: demonstrates that safe and fair working conditions are provided in the workplace.
  • ⏱️ Checks compliance with international labour standards on matters such as overtime, wages and leave.
  • 🤝 Promotes adherence to fair trade and ethical production principles.
  • 🌍 Ensures social compliance throughout the entire supply chain.
  • 🔍 Enables brands to manage their suppliers transparently and responsibly.

In short: BSCI shows not just the quality of a product, but whether the labour behind it is ethical too.

🌿 What is the BCI – Better Cotton Initiative certification?

It aims to make cotton production around the world more beneficial both for the environment and for producers.

  • Supports farmers: BCI provides a training system that teaches cotton farmers to use less water, reduce chemical use and protect the soil.
  • Environmentally conscious: causes no harm to nature's balance, thanks to sustainable farming methods.
  • Supports fair and ethical production: cares that everyone working in the field receives their due rights and works in safe conditions.

In short: BCI certification shows that a product isn't just "nice", but has also been produced the right way. 🌱

So Why Do We Care About All This?

Certifications are obtained through inspection by independent bodies; they let you see what isn't visible, and know what isn't known.

It matters to us that every parent who values their baby is able to find the right product. At Little Gusto, we don't just look at the soft fabrics that touch a baby's skin, we also look at those fabrics' impact on nature, on human labour, and on the future. Because we care about our planet, we wholeheartedly believe it can become a better place through a sustainable approach, and we dream of a brighter tomorrow for our children…

If you'd like to get to know the trust behind every touch on your baby's skin, and our respect for nature, more closely, do take a look at our certifications 🌿

With love, The Little Gusto Team
